The Others:
SPOILERS IN THIS PAGE! Thank you to Wikipedia for the general information.
Benjamin "Ben" Linus, Henry Gale: Ben originally appeared when captured by Danielle Rousseau in Season 2. He insisted for the entirety of the season that his name was Henry Gale, an identity he stole from a dead balloonist. Ben appears to be the leader of the Others. He is treated with the utmost respect. He appears to have a past of some sort with Juliet, and tells Jack that he has lived on the island his entire life. Juliet reveals that either Ben is in some way being Alex's father. This could mean he is, he his lying, that he has tricked the rest of his cohorts, or that everyone but Alex knows the truth. We really don't know yet. He is suffering from a life threatening tumor that Jack has removed via surgery. He just needs to do a biopsy to make sure it is not malignant.
Ethan Rom: Ethan was the first of the Others to be introduced. After Flight 815 crashed, he was sent by Ben to investigate and locate survivors from the fuselage. He and Goodwin were ordered to live, listen, learn, and above all else, don't get involved and prepare a list within three days. Ethan lived among the survivors until Hurley starts a census and compares it with the flight manifest. Then it is discovered that he was not on the plane just as he kidnaps Charlie and Claire. Ethan leaves Charlie to hang in a tree and takes Claire to a DHARMA medical station. he injects her with syringes and made a nursery for her. Claire escapes with the aid of Alex Rousseau. Ethan is caught in a trap set by the survivors, but before they can interrogate him Charlie shoots and kills him to protect Claire. Ethan also met Juliet before being on the island and had a role in bringing her to the island.
Goodwin: Goodwin is also a spy for the Others, like Ethan. He was sent to investigate the tail section after the Others saw Flight 815 break apart. He was told to prepare a 'list' within three days. He lived among the tail survivors for the initial stay on the island. He claims to be a member of the Peace Corps. After Nathan was accused of being 'one of them,' Goodwin kills him and hides the body to throw suspicion off himself. Later, when he and Ana are alone, she says that she knows he is 'one of them' because he came out of the jungle ten minutes after the crash and he was not wet. Goodwin says that the Others are good people, which parallels Ben's claim he 'is not a bad person.'
Tom: Tom appears to be the unofficial spokesperson for the Others, but he is not the leader. While he is not the leader, he still has some authority as seen in his dealings with Ethan, Alex, and Pickett. While in the Hydra Station, he appears to be second-in-command to Ben but his ranking in relation to Juliet's is unclear. Tom made his first appearance by kidnapping Walt. Later, he holds Kate at gunpoint to get Jack to give up the guns and leave Michael in the jungle. While exploring the Staff (the medical Hatch) Kate finds dirty clothes, Tom's beard, and theatrical glue. In some instances, he shows some semblance of kindness to Kate but remained gruff to Sawyer. He informed her that 'she was not his type' though. When Jack has him help in the surgery of Ben, he informs the doctor that he is afraid of blood.
